Meet Your Therapist
Hi, I’m Roma—and I’ve been in the deep end too.

I bring 25+ years of clinical experience across hospital systems, transplant centers, and private practice. I've sat with people in their hardest moments — traumatic brain injuries, cancer diagnoses, spinal cord injuries, pain, chronic illness, and the invisible wounds that never show up on a chart.

My clients describe me as empathetic and challenging. I don't shy away from the hard parts — because that's where real change lives.

The Difference
Therapy that helps you understand yourself, not just cope.

One of the things I hear most from clients is that understanding what's happening changed everything. When you can connect the dots between what happened in the past, how your nervous system learned to respond, and what shows up in your life today — that's when real change becomes possible.

I bring psychoeducation into every session. Not textbook explanations, but real, practical insight into the biology of stress, the nature of trauma, and the science of how we heal.

"Roma helped me understand why I felt the way I did. That knowledge was a game-changer. I finally stopped fighting myself."

About

I meet you where you are.

My Story
Hi, I'm Roma.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 25+ years of experience working with people at some of the most difficult crossroads of their lives. I've worked in hospital intensive care units, transplant centers, outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, and private practice. I've sat with people who've just received life-altering diagnoses, people whose children would never walk again, and people whose pain had been invisible for decades.

There is nothing you can bring into this room that I haven't witnessed before. Which means you don't have to protect me from the hard parts. Bring them.

I completed my undergraduate and graduate education at the University of South Florida in Tampa. I hold licenses in Georgia and Florida, and I work with clients in English and in Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi.

My Approach
Empathetic. Challenging. Evidence-based.

My clients describe me as empathetic and challenging — and I think that combination is what makes therapy actually work. Empathy without challenge isn't therapy; it's just company. I create space for you to be fully seen, and then I work with you to actually move.

I use a collaborative approach — we figure out together what works for you specifically. Depending on your needs, I draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Brainspotting, somatic approaches, mindfulness, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and grief work.

I also bring psychoeducation into every session — helping you understand the biology and science of what you're experiencing, not just how to cope with it. Many clients tell me this was the thing that finally made a real difference.

"I'm comfortable working through the uncomfortable — if it means you see progress."

Cultural Responsiveness
What "culturally responsive" actually means here.

I was born and raised in a culture that carries its own rules about strength, silence, family obligation, and what you share outside the home. I understand what it means to feel the pull of two worlds — and the particular exhaustion of performing wellness when you aren't well.

That understanding isn't something I read in a textbook. It's something I carry into every session.

In addition to English, I am proficient in Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi.

Who I Work With
I specialize in individual counseling for adults navigating:
  • Trauma & PTSD
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Perfectionism & People-Pleasing
  • High Achievers & Burnout
  • Medical Challenges & Caregiver Stress
  • Life Transitions & Aging
  • Immigrant & Cross-Cultural Identity
  • LGBTQ+ affirming care

I do not provide couples or family counseling. I do not complete disability forms. I do not accept crisis clients — if you are in crisis, please call or text 988.

Outside the Therapy Room
The life that keeps me grounded.

I enjoy traveling and exploring new places, experiencing different cultures and cuisines along the way. Cooking is another passion of mine — I love trying new recipes and creating meals for others.

I also value leisurely time with family and friends, whether through shared meals or meaningful conversations. These moments help me relax, recharge, and stay connected to what matters most.

Break through in days,
not months.

Meaningful in-depth work with faster results for people who are ready to go deep — and don't have six months to get there.

What Is a Therapy Intensive?
Some things need more than 50 minutes.

Traditional therapy is powerful — but 50 minutes a week has a natural ceiling. By the time you get warmed up, the session is ending. You leave with open loops. The breakthrough you're reaching for stays just out of reach.

A therapy intensive is different. We carve out a dedicated block of time — half a day or a full day — and we go where weekly sessions can't. There's room to open something, sit with it, and actually begin to close it before you leave.

Intensives are designed around the brain's capacity for neuroplasticity — the ability to form new pathways through focused attention, emotional processing, and repeated corrective experience. Longer sessions give the nervous system more time to access, process, and integrate what weekly therapy may only begin to touch.

Intensives aren't for everyone. But for the right person at the right moment, they can accomplish in one session what would take months of weekly work to approach.

What your eyes hold,
your body remembers.

Brainspotting is a precision brain-based therapy that locates, processes, and releases trauma stored deep in the nervous system.

What Is Brainspotting?
Beyond where words can go.

Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting operates on a simple but powerful premise: where you look affects how you feel. By identifying specific eye positions that correspond to areas of neural activation, a trained therapist can help you access and process experiences that are stored in the deeper, subcortical brain — below the reach of conscious thought and traditional talk therapy.

This matters because trauma doesn't live in your thoughts. It lives in your body. In the tension you carry in your chest. In the way your jaw tightens when you hear a certain tone of voice. In the flooding that comes out of nowhere.

Brainspotting works with the brain's natural capacity to heal — and it can move things that have been stuck for years.

As a bottom-up approach, Brainspotting works through the nervous system and body-based processing, not only through conscious thought. For many clients, this can reach material that top-down approaches like CBT may help explain but cannot always fully access on their own.

Works below conscious thought

Accesses the subcortical brain where trauma, fear, and emotional memory are stored — without requiring you to narrate or relive the experience.

🎯
Precision-based processing

Eye positions are identified through felt-sense body awareness — giving the therapist a precise "brainspot" that correlates with stored neural activation.

Often faster than traditional therapy

Many clients experience meaningful shifts in fewer sessions than conventional talk therapy — particularly for trauma that has resisted other approaches.

Who Benefits
Brainspotting is particularly effective for:
  • →  Trauma and PTSD (including complex and developmental trauma)
  • →  Anxiety and phobias that haven't responded to talk therapy
  • →  Performance anxiety and blocks
  • →  Chronic pain and medical trauma
  • →  Grief and loss
  • →  Anger and emotional dysregulation
  • →  Attachment wounds and early childhood experiences
What to Expect
A Brainspotting session with Roma.

Sessions typically begin with a brief check-in and identifying what we're working on. Roma will then guide you to tune into a specific body sensation related to the issue, and work with your eye position to locate the brainspot. You'll process in stillness — with Roma holding what's called a "dual attunement frame" — present with both your brain and your body through the experience.

Some people experience intense emotion. Some experience physical sensations. Some experience a quiet, gradual shift. All responses are valid.

Depression & Anxiety are symptoms.
Let's find the source.

The heaviness. The noise. The way it seems to color everything. These are real — and they're usually pointing to something deeper.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You feel a persistent low that doesn't lift, even when things are objectively fine
  • →  Anxiety shows up as worry, control, irritability, or the inability to rest
  • →  You function — you get through the day — but it takes everything you have
  • →  You've tried to logic your way out of it, and it keeps coming back
  • →  Sleep is hard. Concentration is hard. Feeling present is hard.
Roma's Approach
We go beneath the symptoms.

Depression and anxiety are rarely the whole story. They're the body's alarm system — and my job is to help you understand what they're alerting you to. That might be unprocessed grief, chronic stress, a nervous system that's been running on high alert for years, or patterns that began long before you recognized them as patterns.

We work at the level of cause, not just symptom. That means deeper work — and more lasting relief.

Trauma doesn't stay
in the past. Until it does.

Complex, developmental, acute — trauma lives in the body long after the event is over. This is Roma's deepest area of expertise.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You're easily triggered by things that seem unrelated to what happened
  • →  You feel disconnected from your body, your emotions, or your sense of self
  • →  Your past relationships — family, caregivers, early experiences — show up in your current life in ways you can't quite control
  • →  You've been diagnosed with PTSD, or suspect you might have it
  • →  Your body carries chronic tension, pain, or physical symptoms that have no clear medical cause
  • →  You've been told you're 'too sensitive' or 'overreacting' your whole life
Roma's Approach
Trauma work is the thread that runs through everything.

Complex trauma, developmental trauma, acute trauma — they each have their own texture, and they each require a different approach. What they share is this: they live below the level of conscious thought, in the nervous system, in the body.

I also have a deep understanding of the relationship between trauma and physical health — including how generational trauma and chronic stress show up as illness. The connection between what happened and how your body feels now is something I take seriously, and something I've seen in clinical settings for over 25 years.

We move at a pace that is safe — challenging enough to make progress, careful enough to keep you regulated throughout.

Perfectionism isn't a
personality trait. It's a wound.

The relentless striving. The self-doubt that follows every accomplishment. The exhaustion of never feeling like enough.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You set impossibly high standards — and punish yourself when you fall short
  • →  You say yes when you mean no, and feel resentful afterward
  • →  Your sense of worth is tied to your productivity, your performance, or other people's approval
  • →  You struggle to ask for help without feeling weak or burdensome
  • →  You over-explain, over-apologize, and second-guess yourself constantly
  • →  You've been called 'too much' and 'not enough' — sometimes by the same people
Roma's Approach
We find the wound beneath the achievement.

Perfectionism and people-pleasing are almost always adaptive responses — they worked once. They kept you safe, kept you loved, kept you belonging. The problem is that the survival strategy outlived its usefulness, and now it's running your life.

In my experience — particularly with high-achieving professionals and first-generation clients — this trio of perfectionism, self-doubt, and people-pleasing often has cultural and family roots that need to be honored while being renegotiated. We don't dismantle where you came from. We help you decide how it serves you going forward.

High achievement and
quiet suffering are not contradictions.

You've built the career, checked the boxes, earned the credentials. And you're still not okay. That's not failure — it's information.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You're constantly doing and rarely being — rest feels like a threat
  • →  Your accomplishments feel hollow almost as soon as they're achieved
  • →  You're performing confidence you don't feel
  • →  Burnout isn't the absence of motivation — it's the result of sustained disconnection from meaning
  • →  You're highly functional in your professional life and falling apart in private
  • →  The idea of 'slowing down' feels more frightening than the exhaustion itself
Roma's Approach
The wound beneath the achievement.

High-performing people are often the last to seek help — not because they don't need it, but because the skills that built their careers (discipline, endurance, self-sufficiency) become the same barriers that prevent healing.

In 25 years of clinical work, I've seen again and again that beneath high achievement there is often a story about worth — about what you had to accomplish to feel loved, safe, or enough. We don't dismantle the drive. We separate it from the wound.

I work with executives, physicians, attorneys, engineers, and professionals across industries. I understand performance culture — including the particular pressure that falls on immigrant professionals and first-generation achievers.

A diagnosis changes everything.
You don't have to carry it alone.

25+ years in hospitals, transplant centers, and acute care settings. Roma has been in the room — and she knows what that room costs.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You or someone you love has received a life-altering medical diagnosis
  • →  You're a caregiver whose identity and relationship have fundamentally shifted
  • →  Chronic illness has changed what your life looks like — and you're grieving that
  • →  You're a healthcare professional carrying the weight of your patients' suffering
  • →  The medical system has seen your condition but not you
  • →  You have physical symptoms that doctors can't fully explain — and you suspect there's more to the story
Roma's Approach
This is a specialty born in hospital hallways.

I worked for years in hospitals, inpatient units, and transplant centers — including intensive work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), where I worked with children who experienced catastrophic injuries and the families beside them.

I understand the particular grief that comes with medical challenges: the loss of the body you had, the future you expected, the role you occupied in your family. I understand caregiver burnout in a clinical and personal sense. And I understand the research linking chronic illness to trauma — including generational and epigenetic trauma, which has particular relevance for conditions like kidney disease.

This is not a specialty I read about. It's one I practiced in for two and a half decades.

Life keeps changing.
Support should change with it.

Role changes. Loss of independence. The grief of the life you expected. Aging is one of the least-discussed forms of transition — and one of the most profound.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  Retirement has left a vacuum where identity used to be
  • →  Physical limitations are changing what you can do and who you are
  • →  You're starting a family, changing jobs, marrying, divorcing, or rebuilding after a major role shift
  • →  You're in the sandwich generation — caring for children while also caring for aging parents
  • →  You're watching your parents age, or you're aging yourself, and grief is part of daily life
  • →  The life you planned looks different now than you expected
  • →  You're navigating a new chapter and aren't sure who you are in it
Roma's Approach
Life transitions are significant periods of adjustments and deserve real support.

I've worked with adults across many life stages throughout my clinical career — in hospital settings, outpatient programs, and private practice. I understand that transitions can be complex whether they involve aging, caregiving, family change, career shifts, marriage, divorce, retirement, or becoming a parent.

We work with the full picture: the grief, the identity shifts, the relational changes, and the meaning-making that becomes central when the scaffolding of earlier life changes. This is not 'adjustment counseling.' It's real therapeutic work.

You're living between worlds.
That is its own kind of exhaustion.

First-generation, immigrant, and bicultural experience brings gifts — and specific, underacknowledged pressures. Roma lives this. She works with it every day.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You feel the pull between family expectations and your own desires
  • →  The values you were raised with conflict with the culture you're building your life in
  • →  Family back home, or family in a different cultural frame, makes claims on your choices
  • →  You've been expected to succeed, to represent, to be the dream — and that weight is heavy
  • →  You feel guilt about wanting different things than your parents wanted for you
  • →  Concepts like 'boundaries' feel culturally foreign or family-threatening
Roma's Approach
Boundary-setting that honors where you came from.

I was born and raised in a culture with its own rules about obligation, family structure, silence, and strength. I know what it means to hold two frameworks simultaneously — and how lonely it can feel when neither world fully sees you.

My work with immigrant and bicultural clients is rooted in deep cultural respect. We don't discard the old world to embrace the new one. We help you figure out — on your own terms — how to honor your roots while building a life that fits who you actually are.

I work in English, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. And I understand the particular experience of South Asian professional communities in the United States — including the pressures that fall on physicians, engineers, IT professionals, aging parents, adult children, and families navigating retirement, role changes, and cross-cultural expectations.

We work on the specific dynamics of bicultural identity — the roles, expectations, and relational patterns that traveled with you across cultures. Boundary-setting becomes one of the most practical and meaningful threads of this work: not walls, but clarity. Not rejection, but self-definition. You deserve a space where
your full self is welcome.

An affirming provider — not just a tolerant one. Roma creates space for LGBTQ+ clients to show up completely, without explanation or performance.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You want a therapist who doesn't need you to educate them about your identity
  • →  Identity, coming out, or family acceptance is part of what you're working through
  • →  You're navigating the intersection of LGBTQ+ identity with cultural, religious, or family pressures
  • →  You carry the specific stressors that come with minority stress — and want a therapist who understands what that actually means
  • →  You've had experiences in therapy where you felt you needed to manage your therapist's comfort
Roma's Approach
Affirming means more than accepting.

I am an LGBTQ+-affirming provider. That means this is a space where your identity is not a variable to be worked around, but a dimension of your full humanity that I hold with respect.

I work with clients across the spectrum of LGBTQ+ experience — including those navigating identity at any life stage, those working through family acceptance or rejection, and those carrying the compounded weight of bicultural and LGBTQ+ identity simultaneously.

We'll work on whatever you came to work on — with the full context of who you are informing the process. If your LGBTQ+ identity intersects with other areas of specialty (trauma, family systems, immigrant experience, perfectionism), we'll hold all of it together.

Sessions are $180 per 50 minutes. Frequency is weekly or every two weeks, depending on your needs and goals. For deeper, faster work, ask about our Premium Services: Therapy Intensives and Brainspotting.

You care for everyone else.
Your life needs care too.

Compassion fatigue. Secondary trauma. The slow erosion of the self that happens when you are always the one holding things together.

Does This Sound Familiar?
  • →  You carry your patients home — in your body, your sleep, your relationships
  • →  You've become numb to things that once moved you
  • →  The gap between what you can do and what your patients need is a source of ongoing grief
  • →  You feel guilty for struggling when you 'should' be the strong one
  • →  The culture of your profession doesn't make space for your own distress
  • →  You're highly competent and quietly burning out
Roma's Approach
Roma speaks the language of healthcare.

I worked for 25+ years inside the healthcare system — in hospitals, transplant centers, intensive care settings, and outpatient clinics. I understand the culture. The hierarchy. The expectation that clinicians perform wellness. The particular grief of watching someone you couldn't save.

Healthcare professionals often experience a specific form of trauma that is rarely named or treated — secondary traumatic stress, compounded by institutional demands that reward endurance and punish vulnerability. For many clinicians, the burnout is intensified by caring for patients all day and then going home to care for children, partners, parents, or extended family members.

This is not generic burnout coaching. This is clinical work for work/life balance, compassion fatigue, family caregiving pressure, and the emotional cost of being needed in every direction.

Working with Roma on this.

We'll work on the specific dynamics of healthcare professional stress — including secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, identity erosion, and the grief that accumulates over a career. What clients say.

★★★★★
"My first encounter with Roma Raheja was a big step toward discovering my part in my emotional uneasiness. She quickly established a safe place to truthfully explore specifics about my discomfort. Gradually, over the next year, she guided me with a mixture of suggestions for adjusting my behavior and homework assignments for journalling and exploring podcast content related to the issues I was facing. Roma was supportive of my efforts, reflected what she saw as my progress and always expressed her appreciation for the work I was doing on my own. She also made sure I recognized my courage in performing the hard work of emotional healing, growth and positive practice. Roma was instrumental in my decision to invite and ultimately join my wife in couples therapy outside her practice. It’s been year long journey of discovery and personal growth working with her."

"Working with Roma Raheja, LCSW, has been transformative for me. Her psychoeducational guidance gave me the tools to identify and understand my symptoms, all while clearly explaining the link between the tools and brain functioning. I have developed skills to recognize and regulate my emotions and thoughts, empowering me to manage the stresses of life with confidence in my roles as a parent, spouse, sibling, friend, and entrepreneur. I’m deeply grateful for her consistency, dedication and insight."

"I really appreciate how Roma took the time to try different modalities to see what worked best for me. She didn’t just stick to one method—she listened, adjusted, and helped me find what worked best for me, never judging and always creating a safe environment for me to overcome my fears and anxieties."

★★★★★
"Working with Roma has been such a positive and unexpected gift—I just wish I had connected with her sooner. After 20 years of navigating a chronic illness, along with the emotional weight, guilt, and day-to-day pressures that come with it, she has helped me make sense of my thoughts and feelings in a more grounded way. The most impactful takeaway for me has been learning to extend myself grace. Roma is compassionate, thoughtful, and genuinely cares—an all-around wonderful person to work with."

★★★★★
"I used to doubt that therapy could truly make a difference—and I’ve learned it doesn’t without real effort. But working with Roma made that effort feel deeply worthwhile, more than anything I’ve invested in myself before. Where other therapists guided me toward more traditional approaches for my anxiety related to relationship challenges, Roma offered a fresh perspective that genuinely changed my life. Over nearly four years of working together, I grew in ways I never expected. She created a space where I felt truly seen and developed an approach tailored specifically to me. I’m incredibly grateful for her and can’t recommend her highly enough."
LB, Atlanta, GA
★★★★★
"I’m grateful to be working with Roma, who understands my cultural background and family dynamics. It makes the process much easier, as I didn’t have to spend time explaining cultural norms—something that had been exhausting in the past when working with non-Desi providers."
SS, Alpharetta, GA
